Building long-term relationships with local communities

The Group’s expansion takes sustainable development issues into account, in environmental, economic and social terms.
Arc was one of the first French companies to sign the United Nations Global Compact. This text urges companies to improve in four areas: human rights, labor conditions, the environment and combating corruption. Having always strived to address these issues, the Group made a commitment to setting new improvement objectives by signing the Compact.

The Global Compact was initiated by Kofi Annan, the United Nations Secretary General, in 2000. It fosters convergence between private-sector practices and the universal values defended by the UN: respect for human rights and sustainable development.
Companies decide to sign the Compact on a voluntary basis. Each year, the signatories must make a report entitled Communication on Progress (COP).

Reducing the Group’s environmental footprint

As early as 2004, Arc implemented a structured plan to reduce its energy consumption and primary emissions and to optimize its water consumption. All the Group’s employees are aware of and sensitive to these issues. The Group has achieved notable results, thanks to the efforts of all the staff, improvements in our production processes and the establishment of production facilities in the Middle East and South-East Asia, in order to reduce pollution linked to transport. The results are assessed with precision each year!

  • Greenhouse gas emissions per ton of glass produced decreased by 14% from 2008 to 2014.
  • The rate of waste recycling has reached 95%.
  • Water consumption decreased by 10% between 2008 and 2012.

Sustainable business development

Arc draws on the expertise of its Research and Development Division to improve the chemical composition of its glasses and its production techniques.

Lighter types of glass, glass without heavy metals (Kwarx®, Diamax®); decoration processes that use low temperatures and organic inks; the design of increasingly environmentally-friendly packaging, and so on. All these innovations reduce the Group’s impact on the environment and health.

Building the industry of the future

By taking on apprentices from every type of background, the Group aims to renew its labor-force in an effective and pro-active manner and to ensure that each trade draws on a wide variety of profiles. This is an invaluable asset… a genuine source of creativity!

On 18 February 2016, the Pas-de-Calais département, “Pas de Calais Habitat” housing association and Arc signed a partnership agreement aimed at helping young people in the area find accommodation. This innovative project is one of the first of its kind in France.

In 2016, one hundred and twenty new apprentices will join the company on work-study schemes. Arc’s objective is to hire ALL these young apprentices at the end of their work-study programs.

Supporting local communities

Because Arc’s history is closely linked to that of the Saint-Omer region, the Group actively contributes to developing employment in the area.

Working with the public authorities, Arc helps local start-ups establish themselves and develop their businesses. Three successive business revitalization agreements (worth a total of €9.5 million) have been implemented. Support was provided to around thirty companies between 2005 and 2012, with over 1,500 jobs created!
